In the Spring of 2018 I released a series of videos about perimenopause–the first video focuses on what to expect as you enter “the change.” You can watch all 3 of them here and I’d like to tell you about some new insights after running my Natural Menopause Map intensive multiple times. If you are a woman in your 40s or early 50s, please read on…
What I’ve learned is that many of you are really unsure of what to expect as this massive life-transition approaches. Many of you are afraid that your body is going to fall apart and some women are secretly afraid of losing their minds too. Eeks! I guess it really should be no surprise given how negatively our culture views women as we get older, wiser, and frankly, more powerful! It’s a ridiculous charade that women should never “show their age” as if turning 50 is some kind of death knell.
So many things are changing; your body, your brain, your outlook on life. These changes can be rocky and painful or they can be an opportunity for powerful and lasting growth. What will this transition be like for you?
As we approach menopause our hormones do start to fluctuate, sometimes wildly, and it can be a roller coaster of anxiety attacks, hot flashes, angry outbursts and changes in our metabolism, skin, hair and vaginal tissues! Not to mention heavy bleeding, irregular cycling and a greater likelihood of developing fibroids and ovarian cysts. The funny thing is, working with women in the perimenopausal period of their lives is my favorite patient population! As a naturopathic doctor, my perspective is radically different than the one offered by 99% of gynecologists.
A woman at this life-stage is certainly going through a lot of changes but it can actually be one of the most rewarding times in a woman’s life. With the right education and support I’ve guided many women to find peace and strength in themselves during this major life transition. In addition, many women are hesitant to use hormone-replacement therapy (whether synthetic drugs or bio-identical hormones) and that’s one of the things that makes my approach unique.
So this is one of the insights I have gained–women want natural solutions at menopause and there’s just so few options available from the mainstream medical establishment. Not all women are good candidates for hormone-replacement therapy and some women simply don’t want to put themselves at greater risk for cancer and other health problems.
Women also want individualized recommendations for diet, nutritional support, proper exercise and freedom from the mental constraints that may have held you back as a younger woman. That’s why I’ve changed the way I’m doing the Natural Menopause Map program so you get all the 1-on-1 advice you need in addition to several home-study modules with worksheets to complete and review with me personally. It’s a great combination of my expertise as a physician and my ability to uncover what needs to change in your health habits and routines so that you feel great.
Working with me at the beginnings of menopause means we get into everything from your food habits and hang-ups, what diet will serve your body best without you feeling like you’re living with constant restrictions (not my way at all!) and teaching you the self-care practices and particular nutritional requirements that will allow you to gain strength and support your good health for many years to come.
